How To Make a Pixie Cardigan and Hat


SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • DK Yarns – 2 (2, 3) balls
  • Needle: US size 4 (3.5mm) knitting needles, US Size 6 (4mm) circular needle 24″ long, or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers, stitch holders, small pom pom maker, 5 buttons 3/8″-1/2″

Hat: Baby (Toddler)

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Cardigan Chest: 21 (23-1/4, 25-1/2)”
Hat Circumference: 16 (17-1/2)” 

GAUGE
22 sts and 28 rows = 4″ in Stockinette Stitch
Save time, check your gauge.

NOTES
The cardigan is worked in one piece from the neck down. The hat is worked as a flat piece, then seamed. If worked from the ball as is, the hat will have very long stripes. If desired you can cut yarn and shorten stripes to closer match the cardigan stripe length.

DIRECTIONS:

Using smaller needles, cast on 82 (90, 90) sts. Knit 7 rows.

Yoke
Change to larger circular needle.
Row 1 (RS): K9 (11, 12), yo, k1, pm, k1, yo, k17 (17, 15), yo, k1, pm, k1, yo, k22 (26, 28), yo, k1, pm, k1, yo, k17 (17, 15), yo, k1, pm, k1, yo, k9 (11, 12) – 90 (98, 98) sts.
Row 2 (and all WS rows): Purl.
Row 3: * Knit to 1 st before marker, yo, k1, sl marker, k1, yo; rep from * 3 more times, knit to end – 8 sts increased.
Row 4: Purl.
Rep Rows 3 and 4, 15 (16, 18) more times – 218 (234, 250) sts. Break yarn.

Divide Body and Sleeves
Next row: Please first 27 (30, 33) sts to first marker on holder for Left Front. Rejoin yarn and k53 (55, 57) sts to second marker for Left Sleeve and turn work. Put remaining 138 (149, 160) sts on holder and continue with Left Sleeve sts only.

Left Sleeve
Row 1 (WS): Purl.
Row 2 – Decrease Row (RS): K2, ssk, knit to last 4 sts, k2tog, k2 – 2 sts decreased.
Continuing in Stockinette St, rep Decrease Row every 4th row 7 (8, 9) more times – 37 sts.
Work even in Stockinette St until sleeve measures 4½ (5, 6)” from division, ending with a WS row.
Change to smaller needles.
Knit 8 rows.
Bind off loosely.

Right Sleeve
Skip 58 (64, 70) Back sts, leaving them on a holder. Re-join yarn to Right Sleeve sts, k53 (55, 57) sts to marker and turn work. Leave remaining 27 (30, 33) sts on holder for Right Front. Continue on Right Sleeve sts only.
Work same as for Left Sleeve.
Sew sleeve seams, leaving a long tail at underarm end of seam.

Lower Body
Re-join yarn to Left Front sts on holder, ready to work a RS row. K27 (30, 33) sts from holder for Left Front, k58 (64, 70) sts from holder for Back, k27 (30, 33) sts from holder for Right Front – 112 (124, 136) sts.
Work even in Stockinette St until body measures 5-1/2 (6, 6-1/2)” from division, ending with a WS row.
Change to smaller needles.
Knit 8 rows.
Bind off loosely.

FINISHING
Use tails from sleeve seams to close up any gaps at armholes. 

Button Band
Using smaller needles, starting at lower corner of right front, pick up and knit 65 (69, 75) sts evenly along right front edge.
Knit 7 rows.
Bind off.

Buttonhole Band
Using smaller needles, starting at neck edge of left front, pick up and knit 65 (69, 75) sts evenly along left front edge.
Knit 3 rows.
Next row – Buttonhole Row (RS): K3, * yo, k2tog, k5; rep from * 3 more times, yo, k2tog, knit to end.
Knit 3 rows.
Bind off.

Weave in ends. Sew buttons to button band opposite buttonholes. Block to finished measurements.

HAT
With smaller needles, cast on 89 (98) sts.
Knit 7 rows.
Change to larger needle.
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2 (WS): Purl.
Continue in Stockinette St until piece measures 4 (5)”, ending with a WS row.

Shape Crown
Row 1 (RS): K28 (31), k2tog, pm, k27 (30), k2tog, pm, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 86 (95) sts.
Row 2 (WS): Purl.
Row 3: * Knit to 2 sts before marker, k2tog; rep from * once more, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 3 sts decreased.
Rep Rows 2 and 3, 26 (29) more times – 5 sts.
Bind off.

FINISHING
Sew seam of hat from brim to tip. Use pom pom maker to make small pom pom and sew securely to tip of hat. Weave in ends.
