How to turn scaffold boards into an office desk

This week I made myself a new workbench for my office and I am sharing how to turn scaffold boards into an office desk. You might remember my old office desk, it was an Ikea hack which you can see here. I gave my old office desk to my boss as I needed something that I could use as a workbench and would be multifunctional. I got my hands on some used scaffold boards and I used them to make my table top. I added some Ikea legs that are adjustable, this means I can raise the table when I need to sew, craft or cut fabric and then lower when I need to use it as an office desk. I am delighted with my new workbench and I have put together a Youtube video sharing how I made it which you can catch below.

Scaffold boards into a table top

I used three scaffold boards for my table top. I didn’t need to cut the length as they were the perfect length for the nook in my office. I laid the three planks out and I used some metal brackets that I picked up in Homebase to drill the three scaffold boards together. If you do not have brackets you can use smaller pieces of wood to drill your boards together. I used my drill to add some pilot holes before I added screws. I then flipped over my table top and have it a good sanding. I needed to sand off some cement and dirt that had been on the wood. I also wanted to get it as smooth as I could. I then gave it a good deep scrub using some Krud Kutter to remove any remaining grime. I then gave it a light whitewash with some watered down white paint and sealed it with some clear matt varnish.

The Ikea table legs

I used the Ikea Finnvard legs for the base of my table. I love these because I can adjust the height of them and they also have slats on the bottom so I can use them as storage. These were easy enough to assemble and were only €25 each. They also come in a wood shade but I choose white to match my office chair. I then placed my table top on top of the legs. You can drill the top to the legs, however, as I will be moving the height of my legs often I didn’t permanently fix them to the legs. Your scaffold board top will be really heavy so will stay in place.

Here are some images of how my table turned out. You can catch a video from earlier this year where I decluttered my office and added new storage, check it out here.
